Horizon Bathtub Design Ideas
Horizon bathtubs create the impression of an edgeless pool with a waterfall in your own home. If a quiet, trickling brook is your idea of relaxation, you might consider implementing some Horizon bathtub design ideas in your bathroom. Horizon tubs allow water to overflow the edge into a surrounding channel. A pump recirculates the water back into the tub, and an in-line heater keeps it warm. Beautiful, Luxurious Bathtub Ideas and Inspiration Many Horizon bathtubs promote a spa-like experience with different hydrotherapy methods to gently massage the body. In addition, some offer chromotherapy-an option that uses colored lights, sequenced for maximum relaxation. Horizon bathtubs are also larger than normal tubs, usually about 6 to 8 feet long; this allows for whole-body immersion. Horizon bathtubs afford multiple options for installation and design. Their top edge may be flush with a new stone, tile or wooden surround, or they can be dropped into an existing surround or alcove. They do require more structural support than do regular bathtubs. Other horizon tubs are designed to be level with the floor, giving the feel of stepping into a natural pool of water. Though most Horizon tubs tend to be rectangular, they are also available in oval, circle, and square shapes to satisfy your design choices. Horizon bathtubs are perfect additions for bathrooms with picture-window views of cityscapes, gardens or mountainsides. Creating a clean, crisp spa bathroom or a warm-hued, cozy bathroom complete with a fireplace are all achieved with the luxury of an Horizon tub. If you are looking for a more modern feel, you might have your Horizon tub filled from the ceiling. If you are a bit less adventurous, you can add waterfall fillers to the surrounds. Of course, rim-mounted faucets will also work with horizon bathtubs.

Horizon Jetted Tub: Methods to Keep the Sparkle Intact
Most households in Western nations have become accustomed to having stress-free baths using jetted bathtubs. But what are they exactly? A jetted tub is a bathtub of a regular size with Jacuzzi jets. It`s a smaller version of an oversized Jacuzzi or whirlpool. For those who have a somewhat larger bathroom and can accommodate a classy up gradation within their budget, it is advisable to get these tubs in their house for winding down after a hard day at work. From offering a splendid massage to relaxing those tired muscles, the tubs ensure you have a great bath. But at the same time, ensure you acquire proper knowledge about jetted tubs and other considerations like cleaning, space, maintenance and so on. The basic types Ideally, there are two types of jetted bathtubs: The first one shoots more water through the jets. The water jet tube creates greater waves in the water that provides a wholesome massage. On the other hand, the air jet bathtub systems cycle the bath water on continuous basis through the jets, resulting which the water stays longer. The best are those that come with a self-cleaning mechanism, so no harm choosing those. The second type resorts to air jets for creating movement in the water. Think of bath salts, bubble bath, bath oils and you will know how these additives can rightly be used in these. Now, there are multiple small tubes known to deliver air inside the bath water, which produces a soothing motion. Comparatively, the massage from air jets is weaker than the water jet bathtubs. Besides, these tubs cool the water faster than conventional baths. Cleaning the tubs Continuous use and neglect towards cleanliness can put your jetted bathtub at a risky zone. There will be no fun the next time you feel like relaxing with music, filling the tub with lukewarm water, throwing in those petals or bath salts and essential oil, lighting scented candles, sipping the wine from the glass and it goes on. We hate to put it before you but these jets often becoming the breeding ground for mold, mildew and bacteria if not cleaned well. But the good thing is that it`s super easy to clean and maintain. There are two methods that you can employ to clean the mess- one, via the household cleaners and the other, using special cleaners. -Using household supplies Start by filling up the tub with water; say about 4 inches above the highest jets. Now turn off the induction valve as that will ensure the water goes through the pipes and not get mixed with air. There`s no doubt that opening the air induction port proves effective, since the turbulence increases by several notches; but do read the cleaning instructions and guidelines beforehand. Add a cleanser, preferably a low-foaming surfactant like powdered dishwasher detergent in the water. Most experts will advise on using something that speeds the enzymatic action and not the acidic one, as the latter strips the sealant on the brass and chances of tarnishing are considerable high. At the same time, bleach is a great disinfectant but few manufacturers are against its use as it can dry out internal gaskets. In emergency situations, it`s allowed though. Now set the jets to the highest pressure and turn on. This usually takes about 10-15 minutes till all the residue is cleaned off. Fill up with cold water and rinse out the remaining dirt completely. Drain the tub and dry completely, before using again. -Using bio film remover Make it a point to read the manual instructions stated on the container and follow them properly sp that no damage is caused to the jetted tub. After you have filled the bathtub with warm water (high enough), at least till it covers the jets; turn on. For initial cleaning, run the tub for at least an hour. When it comes to maintenance cleaning, make a light concentration of bio film remover and add to the water. Now run for a smaller duration (10-15 minutes). Refill the tub till water covers the jets completely. Now drain off excess water after you have run the tub for some time. Use it again after it`s dried.

Solid surface
Solid surface is a man-made material usually composed of a combination of alumina trihydrate (ATH), acrylic, epoxy or polyester resins and pigments. It is most frequently used for seamless countertop installations. Solid Surface Top Seamless Integral Kitchen Sink Integral Cove Slash with Wall Panel Solid surface was first introduced by DuPont in 1967 under the name of Corian. Since the expiration of their patent, other manufacturers have also introduced their brands as well. Contents 1Performance characteristics 2Availability 3Manufacture 4Fabrication 4.1Materials 4.2Tools 5Applications 6Related materials 7See also 8References Performance characteristics[edit] Solid surface is a non-porous low-maintenance material used for surfaces such as countertops. It can mimic the appearance of granite, marble, stone, and other naturally occurring materials, and can be joined nearly invisibly by a trained craftsman. Typically manufactured in sheet form for fabrication into finished countertops, solid surface can also be cast into a variety of shapes, including sinks, shower pans and bathtubs. Sheet goods can also be heated and bent into three-dimensional shapes using a process called thermoforming, which adds to the versatility of the product. Color and design flexibility are key factors when choosing engineered composites over natural stone. In a residential setting, solid surface can be used as kitchen countertops, bathroom vanity tops, and shower and tub surrounds. Countertop fabricators typically join solid surface sheets into desired shapes using a two-part adhesive, after which the cured joint is machined flat. The same method is used to build up edge thickness, which can be profiled using tools and techniques similar to those used to work hardwoods. A major appeal of solid surface is its impermeability. Solid surface sinks can be joined to the countertop surface with no gaps, which eliminates areas for water to collect and bacteria to grow. Integral backsplashes can also be created that follow the contours of the wall [seamlessly" and without gaps. Should the material become scratched or broken, solid surface can, in most cases, be repaired quickly by a certified solid surface repair company or trained fabricator. Cracked sinks can be replaced as well. Because the surface is solid throughout, a countertop that has undergone years of wear and tear can be refinished. The installed product is available in a variety of finishes, ranging from matte to high-gloss, although most manufacturers recommend a matte or satin finish for ease of maintenance. Availability[edit] Solid surface is available in hundreds of colors and visual textures, ranging from solid colors to sparkling, marbleized, or granite effect. Dozens of multinational companies manufacture solid surface sheet goods and sinks for the world market; and hundreds of smaller, regional manufacturers produce for local markets. Although solid surface faces competition from natural stone and engineered stone/quartz surfacing, the material is popular in Asia, particularly in residential new construction. An emerging market for solid surface is in commercial and industrial settings, where its non-porous characteristics, combined with durability, renewability and formability make it the material of choice for many designers and architects. Also appealing, is the wide range of colors and textures, as well as the ability to custom-color the material for large projects. Hospitals, in particular, employ large amounts of solid surface for sinks, showers, nursing stations and wall cladding, because its seamless properties eliminate gaps and crevices that harbor harmful bacteria. Manufacture[edit] Solid surface is manufactured by mixing acrylic, epoxide or polyester resin with powdered bauxite filler and pigments. The material chemically cures and is heated to 60°C or more. Cured material is then cut in sheets or shapes and sandedon one or both sides depending the brand used. Sometimes the material is brought to 160°C and cooled, to improve its heat resistance. [1] Acrylic-modified polyester solid surface can be mixed one sheet at a time using different formulations, effects and appearances. Acrylic-modified polyester solid surface can be injected into molds to produce various solid decorative design figures. Solid-surface manufacturing companies may be members of the trade organizations American Composites Manufacturers Association, ISFA (International Surface Fabricators Association, and ICPA (International Cast Polymer Association).[2] These organizations identify the product under the "brand" of MasterCast Engineered Composites. Solid surface can also be moulded using dedicated moulds. For example free standing baths are manufactured using a 2-part mould tool which creates a cavity for the material to be poured into. Once the mould has been prepared for casting, the material is mixed and degassed in an automated casting machine. It is then injected into the cavity of the mould. Many finishes are available including, gel coated, matte, gloss, metallic and textured. Fabrication[edit] A surface fabricator shapes and installs functional and decorative surfaces, usually in buildings. Surface fabrication, as a distinct professional enterprise, usually involves complex tasks of surface shaping. A leading case is countertopfabrication. Materials[edit] For interior spaces, surfaces include solid coverings or decking for floors or walls, and countertops for kitchens, bathrooms, and workspaces. Natural surfaces are composed of naturally occurring materials like wood, stone, mineral, clay, gum and resin. Synthetic surfaces contain, in addition to any natural materials, man-made substances such as metal alloys or polymers. Solid surfaces are synthetic surfaces manufactured from polymeric materials. Tools[edit] Tools of surface fabrication include routers, drills, templates, clamps, ovens, suction cup grips, and table saws. Larger surface fabricators may also use CNC routers. For all but the simplest jobs, surface fabrication usually takes place in the workshop, after which the finished product is assembled and installed at the work site. Installation of multi-part surfaces, such as "L" and "U" shaped countertops, often involves complex work with specialized tools, to create a seamless result. Applications[edit] Solid surfaces is used in the following environment [3]: Kitchen/Bathroom: kitchen worktops with integrated sink, vanity countertop, bath tub etc. Hospitality/Catering: bars, tables, reception desks etc. Shop Fitting: displays, counters, wall cladding etc. Airports: check-in counters Public buildings: displays in museums, facades, meeting tables etc. Hospitals: laboratory countertops, decontamination sinks, endoscopy etc. Solid surface is priced to compete with natural stone or quartz surfacing. It is available in many colors and patterns. The material can be formed to shape, which makes it appealing to commercial and industrial designers. Specialist fabricators possess the skills and knowledge necessary to provide advice and customer service. Certain high-heat applications (anything above 400 F /200 C) are discouraged, due to the danger of cracking. Because scratches in solid surface appear white to the human eye, most dark colors are not recommended for high use areas. Related materials[edit] Engineered stone uses quartz powder and pigments and generally requires different tools from those used with solid surface materials. Pros and cons: 9 bathtub materials to consider
Owning a home is a perpetual investment. It requires routine inspections, regular maintenance and a broad range of additional expenses both predictable and unexpected. Potential buyers want to feel confident that their money is going toward their future comfort and security - not down the drain. Real estate agents have a responsibility to these buyers to fully inform them of a home`s quality. More than basic information like square footage, they should have a thorough knowledge of the smallest details. This minutia includes the materials and makeup of the property`s fixtures. Though it may seem insignificant, the composition of a bathtub will eventually factor into repair and replacement costs. Agents who understand the advantages and disadvantages of different bathtub materials can serve as a resource to buyers, reflecting credibility and a high standard of professionalism. Let`s take a look at nine bathtub materials and detail what every agent and broker should know about each one. Fiberglass Pixabay Fiberglass is essentially reinforced plastic, with many of the same properties. These tubs are similarly inexpensive and lightweight, which makes them easy to manage and install. Damage doesn`t pose as much of an issue, as most flaws are simple to fix for any homeowner with a DIY attitude and the right supplies. Your perfect day: an hour-by-hour plan for agents Tom Ferry`s detailed agenda to schedule your day for maximum impact READ MORE This damage is still a factor to consider though, and the material doesn`t often hold up well. Fiberglass is porous, with a tendency to warp and crack as it absorbs water, and cleaning equipment adds to this deterioration. Most hardware stores sell fiberglass repair kits that can take care of these problems. Porcelain Photo by Emily Austin on Unsplash Often used as a finishing surface or glazing material over steel, porcelain is an excellent material. Most porcelain models have a reasonable price point and are easy to maintain, with the potential to last a long time with the proper care. Beyond their durability, their glossy appearance has a conventional appeal. However, porcelain bathtubs are often heavier than many of their counterparts. If the layering chips, it can result in rust, which can worsen without attention. Fortunately, most homeowners can make DIY repairs on their own with products available at a hardware store, like sandpaper and high-gloss paint. Acrylic Photo by Lisa Moyneur on Unsplash Fixtures typically account for 15 percent of a bathroom remodeling budget. It makes sense, then, that renovators would want to minimize their costs with an acrylic bathtub. Inexpensive and popular, this material requires minimal maintenance, resisting cracks and chips as well as the buildup of mildew. Despite their durability and long lifespan, acrylic bathtubs are still susceptible to scratches. Their cheap production often results in a flimsy structure for models without fiberglass reinforcement. That said, repair is a relatively easy processemploying a two-part polyester filler and sandpaper, among other items. Ceramic Photo by Chastity Cortijo on Unsplash Compared to many other bathtub materials, ceramic tiles offer the most options for size. They`re comparatively cheap, available in a broad selection of shapes and styles and easy to clean. Although ceramic bathtubs require a longer period of time to absorb heat, they release that heat just as slowly. Maintenance is an unavoidable issue, however, and the life of the bathtub will depend on consistent care. Homeowners have to replace the grout that holds the tiles together, or it will eventually degrade. And as for comfort, the uneven surface and imperfections inherent to ceramic tiling may cause irritation. Resin Photo by Jared Rice on Unsplash A high-quality composite that can imitate the appearance of stone, resin is an excellent alternative that`s far less heavy and expensive. It`s still costly, but the price reflects in the durability of the material. These bathtubs are resistant to scratches, stains and discoloration, while performing well with heat retention. Resin lasts far longer than other bathtub materials, keeping its appearance with regular wipe downs. Beyond its cost, resin has very few downsides and deserves its good reputation. When performing maintenance on a resin bathtub, homeowners should employ sandpaper and a polishing compound. Stone 2il org / Flickr Beautiful and luxurious, stone bathtubs leave an impactful first impression. Hewn from granite, marble and other materials, these bathtubs are perfect for heat retention. Their composition is sturdy and invulnerable to many kinds of damage, delivering a long lifespan. Interested agents should seek additional resources. That said, these stone bathtubs, like metal bathtubs, require a strong foundation to support them, and the floor has to hold their immense weight. Maintenance also requires a knowledge of the material and a proper application of cleaning supplies. Homeowners can typically repair minor damage with an abrasive pad. Plastic Photo by Abigail Lynn on Unsplash Inexpensive and common, plastic bathtubs deserve their placement on this list. Plastic is resilient and can effectively manage heat, which is an essential feature for those who enjoy taking lengthy baths. More than that, it isn`t likely to chip, and an owner can mend most damage with epoxy-based patch material. Like every kind of material, plastic tubs have their downside. Their lower quality can leave them susceptible to scratches. Frequent use eventually leads to stains, and they aren`t known for their longevity. Depending on the kind of property the tub is in, these factors may seem inconsequential, but they`re important to note. Metal Wikimedia Commons Though metal bathtubs are unusual, they have a distinct appeal that`s impossible to deny. More than their old-world charm, they`re durable fixtures often coated with an enamel surface that protects against cracks. With many different aesthetic options to choose from, they`re an attractive choice. With proper care, a metal bathtub can last for a very long time. However, maintenance can prove difficult depending on the type of metal, and professional care is expensive and often necessary for repair work. In addition to these flaws, many bathtubs in this category fail to adequately retain heat. Wood Wikimedia Commons Considered a superior soaking tub, wooden baths are popular in many different contexts. They have a place within the home, with flexibility in style that matches any decor. More than other materials, wood has the ability to sustain water temperature for extended amounts of time, but it comes with certain challenges. Though companies treat the material, wood tends to warp and crack with extended exposure to water. Regardless, homeowners will have to use it at least once a week to prevent it from drying out. They should take a proactive approach to maintenance to avoid, or at least delay, the need for repairs. Confidence and competence These traits depend on proper preparation. Real estate agents should take care to study bathtub materials, informing themselves of the details and particulars. If a homebuyer asks a question on the topic, you don`t want to have to scramble for an incomplete answer. Education is an ongoing process, and the day that professionals stop learning is the day they stop earning. Fortunately, today is not that day. Best hot tubs of 2018: Intex Octagonal Pure Spa drops in price for Black Friday
Let`s face it, a hot tub is the kind of thing you`re only going to buy once. And whether you're looking for a budget inflatable hot tub or a luxurious top-end model which costs many thousands of pounds, it`s crucial you get your purchase right. We`ve done lots of searching and scrolling, and found it`s not all about lights and bubble-jets – there are many factors to take into consideration. Here`s our guide to finding your perfect hot tub, along with the best ones out there on the market right now. How to buy the best hot tub for you How much should I spend? Good quality inflatable hot tubs can be had from around £300, but if you want one to take permanent pride of place in your outdoor space, then prices steadily rise into the thousands. Inflatable hot tubs are great for use in warmer weather, but manufacturers recommend packing them away in the winter. If you want to use your hot tub all year round then it makes sense to spend more on a hard-shell hot tub - these are better insulated, and can be used even when the temperatures approach freezing. What do I want from my hot tub? Some might want a hot tub purely as a distraction: a cosy epilogue to a barbecue or al-fresco dinner. Others might find it a daily relief to medical problems such as arthritis and rheumatism. Either way, consider why you`re buying one, and take each product`s features into account based around your needs. If it's just for fun and relaxation, then an inflatable hot tub is a good way to see if hot tubs are for you. If you want a hard-wearing hot tub that's going to last years, though, then spending more on a hard-shell tub means that you don't need to worry about punctures, wear and tear, and dismantling your hot tub every winter. Where do I want my hot tub? Is your hot tub going indoors or outdoors? Getting one installed indoors comes with all sorts of implications, since you`ll be working around issues like humidity (which will require extractor fans to be fitted), slippery floors and electrical connections - it's a job for a professional. For instance, while smaller hot tubs will run from a standard 13 amp mains socket, larger tubs will require their own dedicated mains spur to supply the electricity current required. Outdoors, you have the elements - rain, leaves, the cold - to contend with, but as long as you make sure to use a tight-fitting, thermally-insulated cover and follow the manufacturer's cleaning and maintenance instructions, it's something most people can set up themselves. It's worth considering that inflatable hot tubs often have to rely on external filters and pumps, so they won't always fit as neatly into a corner of a patio. If you want a neater-looking hot tub that you can leave in place all year round, then a hard-shell model may be worth the extra outlay as these routinely integrate the pumps and filters into the outer shell. What are the costs involved in running a hot tub? As with anything that uses plumbed-in water and electricity, you`ll be paying for your hot tub long after you`ve bought it. It's necessary to keep hot tubs warm 24/7, so larger tubs will cost more to run - and if you live in a colder part of the country it will also prove more expensive. It is possible to reduce the temperature when you're not using the hot tub, but this does mean that you'll need to set it back to a comfortable temperature an hour or two before using it. In short, you should budget to spend at around a pound per day on electricity to run a hot tub. Bear in mind, though, that many users have reported costs which are several times higher than that, so it pays to do your homework before splashing out.

Does your bathtub need a makeover? How to find the best option for you
Find the best solution for your budget! Would you take a bath in your tub? If the answer is no, you may want to keep reading. There`s nothing quite like a relaxing bubble bath at the end of a long hard day. But in order to enjoy some TLC in your bathtub, you need a clean space you actually want to sink into. Rust, grime and cracks can quickly turn your relaxing oasis into a gross nightmare, but many of us put off bathtub renovation projects because, well, they're kind of overwhelming. Whether you're dealing with minor rust spots or a major mess, there's a bathtub renovation option out there to fit your budget, timeline and lifestyle. We're breaking down three of the most popular options with the help of some pros who know all about turning a bathtub nightmare into a dream come true. Here are the best ways to renovate your bathtub. Reglazing is a quick, affordable option for redoing your bathtub. 1. BATHTUB REGLAZING/REFINISHING What is it? This bathtub renovation option goes by many names - resurfacing, recoating, refinishing or reglazing - but has a pretty straightforward process. An expert starts by sanding down the tub's surface, fills in cracks and worn areas, then applies several coats of primer and paint before doing a final buffing. It's usually a temporary fix since bathtub reglazing is a purely cosmetic update. [Think of it like you`re putting nail polish on your nails. It`s nice for a little bit, but then as you go through your daily routine, you`re going to need to get it touched up again," said Jennifer Wagner, a merchant for Home Depot`s home services. Will it work for your tub? If your existing bathtub is already in pretty good shape but is covered in minor stains, scratches or other surface imperfections, reglazing is a good option. It`s also ideal for certain types bathtubs. [For homeowners with antique claw-foot tubs made from heavy cast iron, it`s absolutely the way to go," said Dan DiClerico, a home expert for HomeAdvisor. Acrylic bathtubs can also be reglazed, as long as they don`t have any significant issues. Pros: Reglazing is the most affordable bathtub renovation option available and can cost you between $200-$650 on average. It`s quick, usually taking only a day to complete! Cons: The substances pros use to reglaze a tub can be a bit dangerous. [The material used to etch and glaze is very toxic and the customer would need to leave their house for a day or two so the house could ventilate properly," said Vince Albachiaro, a merchant for Home Depot`s home services. Reglazing can only be performed once. [If you get a poor job that`s already peeling, then you will have to proceed to other options anyway," said Leo Lantz, the president of Leo Lantz Construction, Inc. The weather can play a factor in how long it takes for the finishing coat to dry, and how well it bonds to the surface. [Humidity is harmful to the process, so it`s best to avoid tub refinishings during the dog days of summers. Cooler, less-humid weather typical of fall or spring provides the ideal conditions," DiClerico said. Get the latest from TODAY Sign up for our newsletter SUBSCRIBE 2. BATHTUB LINERS What is it? Bath liners are basically an acrylic replica of your existing bathtub - except, you can change the color and skirt style if you want - and they're relatively easy to install. In fact, professionals install the liner on top of the existing bathtub, then permanently adhere it using a combination of two-sided tape and silicone acrylic. Installation typically takes only a day or two, but the whole process can take between one and two months since installers first need to take photos and precise measurements of the area before molding a liner out of acrylic. Will it work for your tub? If your tub has seen better days and reglazing just won`t cut it, a liner might be the best option. [If the tub and surrounding area area too far gone, say with cracks or missing tile work, a full relining is the way to go. This is a common solution for homes that were built in the last few decades, since the design and configuration of the bathtub will likely lend itself to relining - unlike an older, historic home with a freestanding tub that can`t be relined," DiClerico said. Before you dive right in, do some research and make sure you`re working with contractors who are experts in bathtub liners. [If the work isn`t done properly, the surface not prepared properly or if there are an pre-existing conditions (water having gotten in anywhere, for instance) you are basically just covering up a problem that will resurface again soon enough," said Dean F. Rascoe, sales and marketing director at remodeling company G.M. Roth. Pros: Timing: Getting a bath liner installed typically only takes a day or two to complete! If you want to cover the walls as well, it might take a bit more time. A liner is the least invasive option and fairly affordable. You can also update your tub to a shower in some cases. Cons: Tub liner options can be limited in assortment, and won`t totally change the look of your original tub. [Liners can only mimic exactly what you started with, but you can change the color. If you are looking for a different depth, width or length, however, you must replace the tub," Wagner said. Pricing varies based on the material you choose and the level of customization (shelving and other accessories cost more). On average, a bathtub liner can cost anywhere between $1,500-4,000. Sometimes, your bathtub is just too far gone, and you need to replace it entirely.Shutterstock 3. BATHTUB REPLACEMENT What is it? Whether your bathtub is simply nasty or you just want a fresh start, a total bathtub replacement is another option to consider. Naturally, this is the most time-intensive and expensive option, and involves gutting your existing bathtub in order to install a new one. [This option typically involves removing wall tile, which can then lead to sheetrock and/or plaster repairs as well. While the walls are open is the time to upgrade the shower valve, install blocking for future grab bars and incorporate niches into the new tile walls," Lantz said. Will it work for your tub? If you have the time and money to commit to a larger project like a total bathtub replacement, it makes sense to do so. Homeowners who don`t like the size, shape or location of an existing tub have the chance to totally customize their new space. Pros: You get to choose the material of your tub, and can always opt for a less expensive option, like fiberglass or acrylic, and put more money towards the labor involved. You can totally transform your existing bathtub! "This is the only option that truly enables a homeowner to have a tub or a bathroom that truly meets their specific needs," Rascoe said. This is a much more long-term solution, rather than a Band-Aid fix. Cons: Likely the most expensive bathtub renovation option, a new bathtub can cost anywhere between $300-3,000 - plus labor. According to HomeAdvisor, the average cost (including labor and materials) is $3,024. Make sure to factor in some wiggle room in your budget for any tile you might need to put the area around the tub back together. The project can take up to several weeks or months if you opt for a custom unit. If you only have one bathroom in the house, you'll have to make alternate showering/bathroom arrangements during construction. [Tub refinishing and relining are cosmetic fixes. Tub replacement is more like major surgery, which drives up the cost and complexity of the project," DiClerico said. Which option is right for you?

How to Make a Worm Farm Out of an Old Bathtub
When it`s organic gardening that we are after, the crux is creating good soil for the plants. Good soil is fertile, full of microorganisms, and has quality texture. Nothing makes soil quite so good as worms do. They process the organic material in the earth and deposit rich castings with all the soil needs to make healthy plants. Healthy plants are more resilient and give us more nutritious food. In other words, worms are great! Vermiculture, the intentional use of worms for the garden, is becoming more and more common. There are many methods for doing it at home, including worm towers and under-the-sink worm bins. But, for those looking to work on a grander scale, bathtub worm farms might be the way to go. They can be put totether very inexpensively and will provide both valuable worm castings and worm juices to soup up your organic garden. The Old Bathtub and Other Stuff Needed Old bathtubs are pretty readily found in classified listings or places like habitat for humanity restores. They usually won`t cost much, and they are the perfect vessel for making a big worm farm. In addition to the bathtub, worm farmers will need to gather up some wire screen, scrap wood (a couple of pallets would be great), and a bucket to catch worm juice. The tub should also be elevated. It could be on bricks or a basic wooden frame. Additionally, the tub will need to be covered with a porous material like landscaping cloth or even an old sheet or towel. Some people like to go the extra mile and put a piece of corrugated tin over that. Putting the Worm Farm Together The first step will be building the draining frame for the farm. This is just a wooden deck that fits down into the bottom of the tub. A couple of slats running lengthwise should be joined with four or five slats stretching the width. This will keep lifting the material so that the juice can drain out of the tub. Staple the wire screen to the topside of this to prevent worms and debris from falling through. Next, the tub should be put onto some sort of platform. A couple of reclaimed cinderblocks will work, or something made out of scrap wood will suffice. The tub should be lifted and slightly tilted so that the worm juices run toward the drain, under which a bucket will harvest the awesomely fertile liquid. Check out how to make fertilizer teas. Finally, the tub should have some kind of cover. Worms aren`t huge fans of sunlight (or birds), so the cover needs to block those out. Some form of cloth works great. If there is a lot of rain in the area, covering the farm with a more solid roof is probably a good idea.

History of bathtubs and bathing
Documented early plumbing systems for bathing go back as far as around 3300 BC with the discovery of copper water pipes beneath a palace in the Indus Valley Civilization of ancient India; seesanitation of the Indus Valley Civilization.[citation needed] Evidence of the earliest surviving personal sized bath tub was found on the Isle of Crete where a 1.5-metre (5 ft) long pedestal tub was found built from hardened pottery. The clawfoot tub, which reached the apex of its popularity in the late 19th century; had its origins in the mid 18th century, where the ball and claw design originated in Holland, possibly artistically inspired by the Chinese motif of a dragon holding a precious stone. The design spread to England where it found much popularity among the aristocracy, just as bathing was becoming increasingly fashionable. Early bathtubs in England tended to be made of cast iron, or even tin and copper with a face of paint applied that tended to peel with time. The Scottish-born inventor David Buick invented a process for bonding porcelain enamel to cast iron in the 1880s while working for the Alexander Manufacturing Company in Detroit. The company, as well as others including Kohler Company and J. L. Mott Iron Works, began successfully marketing porcelain enameled cast-iron bathtubs, a process that remains broadly the same to this day. Far from the ornate feet and luxury most associated with clawfoot tubs, an early Kohler example was advertised as a "horse trough/hog scalder, when furnished with four legs will serve as a bathtub." The item's use as hog scalder was considered a more important marketing point than its ability to function as a bathtub. In the latter half of the 20th century, the once popular clawfoot tub morphed into a built-in tub with a small apron front. This enclosed style afforded easier maintenance and, with the emergence of colored sanitary ware, more design options for the homeowner. The Crane Company introduced colored bathroom fixtures to the US market in 1928, and slowly this influx of design options and easier cleaning and care led to the near demise of clawfoot-style tubs. A bathtub, bath, or tub (informal) is a large or small container for holding water in which a person or animal may bathe. Most modern bathtubs are made of thermoformedacrylic, porcelain enameled steel, fiberglass-reinforced polyester, or porcelain enameled cast iron. A bathtub is usually placed in a bathroom either as a stand-alone fixture or in conjunction with a shower. Modern bathtubs have overflow and waste drains and may have taps mounted on them. They are usually built-in, but may be free-standing or sometimes sunken. Until recently, most bathtubs were roughly rectangular in shape, but with the advent of acrylic thermoformed baths, more shapes are becoming available. Bathtubs are commonly white in colour, although many other colours can be found. The process for enamelling cast iron bathtubs was invented by the Scottish-born American David Dunbar Buick. Two main styles of bathtub are common: Western style bathtubs in which the bather lies down. These baths are typically shallow and long. Eastern style bathtubs in which the bather sits up. These are known as ofuro in Japan and are typically short and deep. Clawfoot tub Slipper tub The clawfoot tub or claw-foot tub was considered a luxury item in the late 19th century, originally made from cast iron and lined with porcelain. Modern technology has contributed to a drop in the price of clawfoot tubs, which may now be made of fiberglass, acrylic or other modern materials. Clawfoot tubs usually require more water than a standard bathtub, because generally they are larger. While true antique clawfoot tubs are still considered collectible items, new reproduction clawfoot tubs are chosen by remodellers and new home builders[2] and much like the Western-style bathtubs, clawfoot tubs can also include a variety of shower head options. Clawfoot tubs come in 4 major styles: Wooden bathtubs for children and infants in Haikou, Hainan, China Classic roll rim tubs, also called roll top tubs or flat rim tubs as seen in the picture at the top of this page. Slipper tubs – where one end is raised and sloped creating a more comfortable lounging position. Double slipper tubs – where both ends are raised and sloped. Double ended tubs – where both ends of the tub are rounded, as opposed to the classic roll tim tub, which has one rounded end and one fairly flat end. Pedestal tubs Pedestal tubs rests on a pedestal in what most would term an art deco style. Evidence of pedestal tubs dates back to the Isle of Crete in 1000 BC. Baby bathtub A baby bathtub is one used for bathing infants, especially those not yet old enough to sit up on their own. These can be either a small, stand-alone bath that is filled with water from another source, or a device for supporting the baby that is placed in a standard bathtub. Many are designed to allow the baby to recline while keeping its head out of the water. Jacuzzi whirlpool bathtub Hot tubs Hot tubs are common heated pools used for relaxation and sometimes for therapy. The "hippie" era (1967–1980) popularized them in America in songs and movies.[3] Whirlpool tubs Whirlpool tubs first became popular in America during the 1960s and 70s. A spa or hot tub is also called a "jacuzzi" since the word became a generic after plumbing component manufacturerJacuzzi introduced the "Spa Whirlpool" in 1968. Air bubbles may be introduced into the nozzles via an air-bleed venturi pump.

Jet Hydrotherapy Hydrotherapy jets can provide quick tension relief. These jets are strategically placed to release tension in common problem areas, such as your back and shoulders. You can adjust them to different massage intensities, too. Not only do they feel great on sore, tired muscles, but they`re much quieter than their predecessors-making for an even more soothing experience. Air Bath Therapy Looking for the healing benefits of hydrotherapy without the powerful jets? Air baths add active bubbles to the water through small air channels strategically placed in the bottom of the tub. The air flows throughout the bath for a gentle full body massage. Illumatherapy Add some ambiance to your bathroom by opting for a whirlpool with in-tub lighting. These lights can change color, too. Lighting colors have the power to affect how we feel - physically and emotionally. Each color has its own wavelength and energy. The colors can create a multisensory effect on the body and contribute to your overall well-being. Heaters Soak in the warm water for as long as you like. An in-line heater keeps the water temperature consistent with your entire bath. Most whirlpool owners bathe longer than those with conventional bathtubs, so an in-line heater can be an essential feature to look for. Instead of using more water, the heater warms and circulates water through the bath at the perfect temperature. Infinity Overflow Channel Fully immerse yourself in an infinity tub. With a high overflow area, water sits up to the tub line so you can fill it to the top. Walk-in Bathtubs Walk-in bathtubs can still have the same features as whirlpools but are made for easy entry and exit. Open the door, take a seat (it`s built-in), close the door, and fill the tub up for a relaxing soak. The door seal is tight, so you don`t have to worry about leaks. The seating is generous and the floor is slip-resistant, too. A walk-in bathtub can often add many more years of living at home for seniors. Soaking Bathtubs Soaking tubs are gaining popularity once again. The ultra-deep baths allow you to fully submerge for a soothing soak, peace, and quiet. If you`re looking for a vintage bath, a freestanding cast iron claw foot tub can add the appeal of old-world charm to your bathroom. Another perk is that cast iron naturally holds the heat in longer. Pedestal soaking tubs can resemble clawfoot tubs, but instead of feet, they rest on a platform or pedestal. It really depends on the look you`re going for in your bathroom. Soaking bathtubs come in a variety of material options, including cast iron, copper, acrylic, and even stone. Once you choose a bathtub, be sure to choose a tub filler or faucet that has the same look and feel. If you need help installing, be sure to ask us for contractor recommendations, too. Have questions about luxury baths? Already picturing you grabbing a glass of wine, lighting candles, and sinking into pure relaxation? Bath Planet sponsors annual makeover contest
Taking your daily shower in a deteriorating tub/shower combination or stall shower can be highly unpleasant. Climbing into a tub can be difficult as you age and if, in addition, your tile is chipping and cracking and you are also suffering from an invasion of mold, taking that shower can become the most off-putting thing you do on a daily basis. That is why the Daily Herald will team up with Streamwood-based Bath Planet of Chicagoland this spring for the third annual Tub-to-Shower Transformation Sweepstakes. Entries will be accepted from Feb. 18 to March 30 at events.dailyherald.com/contests. The Grand Prize winner, to be announced in April, will win a prize package valued at $10,000, which includes a white shower base, a smooth acrylic wall system, one shower accessory, chrome fixtures and a glass shower door with chrome trim. Bath Planet will review the contestant photos and narrow down the list to ten semifinalists who be contacted April 2 and asked to send in a photo of their existing bathtub and a brief explanation of why they should win the prize package. Three finalists will then be chosen and site inspections scheduled. The grand prize winner will be notified by April 13 and work will be completed soon thereafter. Last year 360 entries were received and Jan and Harry Raimondi of Schaumburg were the chosen recipients of a new shower, replacing an old tub in Jan's bathroom. "My wife and I have lived in our home for 46 years and our tub and tile are the original. We are older now and are seeing the need to change our tub to a walk-in shower, due to difficulty on entering and exiting the tub. Some tiles are cracked and the original plumbing hardware still exists. We feel its time for changes for our continued safety and health," Harry wrote. "We both have aches and pains in our knees and backs so it was hard for her to climb in and out of the tub. I, on the other hand, have a small stall shower that she doesn't like to use," he continued. Soon after the Raimondis won, Bath Planet removed the old tub and replaced it with the shower base, covered the old cracked white tile with a tan acrylic wall system and installed a glass door and new fixtures. "Everything is really good quality," Harry stated. Then Harry painted the walls and installed new trim, making Jan's bathroom a new and custom space. The floor and the rest of the bathroom that they chose when they had the house built 46 years ago still worked. "I have to admit that it sounded a bit scary when they said they were going to rip out the old tub to replace it with a shower, but they did a great job and now the bathroom feels luxurious," he said. All of the replacement work was completed by Bath Planet in one day, Harry said, and the installers were exceedingly clean and professional. In fact, five minutes after they left, he added, you couldn't even tell they had been there. As homeowners age, many find that they no longer want to deal with climbing in and out of a tub which doubles as a shower. They hear horror stories about friends and family members who have fallen during this daily chore and don't want the same fate to befall them. Younger homeowners are also choosing to get rid of their old tubs, preferring to enjoy a walk-in shower. Few have the time or inclination to enjoy a lengthy soak, so why take the chance on a tub/shower combination when they just want to take a shower? Bath Planet is the wet area specialist so it has been the solution for many. They offer stylish, cost-effective, low-maintenance acrylic bath improvements that are made locally -- in a 200,000 square foot facility in Libertyville. Many Bath Planet products install right over the existing ugly wall tile and chipped or faded tub or shower for maximum cost-effectiveness and minimal mess. Bath Planet's products feature the elegant look of ceramic tile, granite or marble -- in a wide variety of colors and finishes -- but without the grout, mess and irritating maintenance because the liners are made of a nonporous, easy-to-clean material. Add to that the array of finishing touches that are available including shower caddies, soap dishes, grab bars, curved shower rods and a selection of shower doors, and homeowners can easily create a complete, unique bathroom that meets their particular circumstances. "Our exclusive product line, ranging from spa showers to walk-in tubs, is constructed out of the toughest acrylic -- specially designed to withstand the wear and tear of daily bathroom use," the Bath Planet website states. "The acrylic is custom-fitted to your existing bathroom and installed with triple-seal technology. Not only will your new bathtub or shower be stunning, but it will also fit seamlessly into your current design and protect your home from harmful water damage." Bath Planet offers replacement tubs and shower bases in a wide selection of colors, sizes and styles to add value to the bathroom within your home. It also has a full line of accessibility products and aging-in-place bath systems to ensure independent living for as long as possible. Roll-in showers, walk-in tubs, soaking tubs and even jetted tubs are all available.

What`s the best way to clean my bathtub?
The definition of bliss: A luxurious soak in a hot, bubbly bath. The definition of misery: Cleaning the dirty, grimy bathtub that results. Who else hates cleaning the tub? Just about everyone, from what I hear. That`s the reason I decided to do some hands-on research into the best way to clean a bathtub. Here`s what I found. Where does that scuzz on the tub come from? Understanding why the tub gets so filthy might make it simpler to tackle the task of de-filthing it. After all, it really doesn`t seem logical. If you shower every day, aren`t you immersing an already clean body in that deliciously scented bath? Well, hate to break it to you, but the scent may be part of the problem. That unsightly gray scuzz is a witches` brew of residue from bath oil, hair conditioner, or similar products, along with soap scum and dead skin cells. If you live in an area with hard water, you`re spicing up the mix with a little limescale, as well. What actually is the best way to clean a bathtub? My personal bathtub (fiberglass, with a non-skid pebbled bottom) seems ingeniously designed to trap dirt - in other words, the perfect subject for some serious experimentation. So I spent a morning trying out different methods, to determine the best way to clean my bathtub. Melamine sponge. I`m a huge fan of melamine sponges (AKA [Magic Erasers"), which seem capable of removing all kinds of spots and stains. However, the prospect of kneeling on the cold, hard tile floor while I slowly hand-scrubbed the entire surface of my tub was intimidating, so I regretfully moved on. Broom plus dish liquid. Always on the lookout for an easier, softer way, I liked the sound of this tip: Spritz the tub with dish liquid (to remove built-up grease), and then sweep it off with a new plastic-bristled broom. Not having a brand new broom handy, I used a long-handled brush instead, without much luck. Dish liquid plus baking soda plus vinegar. By this point, stuck with a tub slathered in dish soap, I decided to go with the flow, as it were, and try adding vinegar (to combat grease and scale) and baking soda (as a gentle abrasive) to the mix. I sprayed on vinegar, sprinkled on soda, and let them steep a while before wiping the goo evenly over my bath. After leaving that for a further 10 minutes, I scrubbed down the tub to reveal a nice beige color, instead of its former shade of grimy gray. Hydrogen peroxide. One thing that the above method did not remove was a bit of staining. A few days before, I`d tried to protect the tub with newspaper before cleaning my stove hood filter, ending up with ink marks on the fiberglass. A paste of 1 TBSP hydrogen peroxide to 1 cup of warm water took care of the stains very nicely, thank you. Caveats Test cleaning products on a small area of the bathtub first. Wear rubber gloves to protect your hands. Be careful using hydrogen peroxide, which can damage clothing and paintwork. Rinse tub well to remove all dish soap, to avoid a slip hazard. Preventive maintenance to keep your tub clean - Sub liquid soap or body wash for the traditional bar of Ivory or Dial. It washes away more readily, leaving less scum behind. - Switch from baths to showers ... or try Japanese-style bathing - climbing into the bathtub to soak (sans bath oil, soap, etc.) only after you have already washed yourself clean. - Clean the tub after every use (some folks even clean the bath while they shower - merrily brushing or sponging away any traces of their presence. This would. Not. Work. In my home) or at least every week so grime doesn`t have a chance to build up. Keep supplies close at hand as a reminder. - Ensure your bath drain is flowing freely so soapy, oily water doesn`t linger on the tub surface. Clean out your drain strainer before a bath or shower, repair your drain stopper, and call a plumber to clear any clogs.
